WAIMATE HORTICULTURAL SHOW. »

The display of cactus dahlias made in ; lie amateur classes was an excellent ne, and some of tho blooms were quite : qual to some cf the best shown by the lurserymen. The collections of Mrs J. I. Fret hey, Mr W. G. White, Mrs Menlennett, and Mr C. Goodson were all ouch admired, and deservedly so. Mrs jitn brick's collections of begonias and ems were fine ones, Ibe same lady also ixhibiting a fine specimen plant of irinium. Mr Betts', senr., collection of pot >lants was an excellent one. A number of original ideas were dismayed in the competition for floral lesigna. The winning design (Mrs jibson's) was a handsome one, consisting of two tennis racquets crossed worked in white flowers on a dark velvet sackground. The second prize was a neat design of a model yacht worked in blue and white hydrangeas by Mrs Stewart. In the children's competition, won by Miss Owen, the design was a floral swing composed of white daisies, srnamented with red geraniums and blue cornflowers. In the competition for bowls of flowers, the judge experienced cousiderable difficulty in separating the first and Beccnd, Miss Puirman and Mrs Limbrick, who both displayed excellent taste. The bridal shower bouquet shown by Misses Muir was a handsome one, and much admired, as was also their exhibit of a lady's basket, Mrs Limbrick taking second honors. The lady's spray exhibited by Mrs Corrigan wa3 very neat and up-to-date. Among the entries for exhibition only were two very fine sprays of bouganivillia, a purple bloom shown by Mrs J. W. Scott. The children's decorated tables were very nearly equal to those shown by the adults, Miss A. Raines', decorated with culliopsis, being very tasteful, and Miss Hair's, with blue clematis and sweet peas, was also very good. In the ladies' competition for decorated tables Mrs Limbrick's table (calliopsis) and Miss Pairman's (heliotrope and white sweet peas) took the judge's eye, the atter also securing honors for decorated mantelpiece. There was a good display of phlox drummondi, Mrs Frethey and Mrs Christie having the best exhibits. Roses were not very strong, it being rather late in the season. There was a fine collection of asters, the prize-takers being Mesdames Frethey and 0. Goodson, and several handsome spikes of gladioli by Mesdames Frethey and Walker. Two handsome specirnon plants of petunia were shown by Miss Hill who secured first and second prizes with them. Considerable competition took place in some of the cookery classes, the plain cake bringing out no less than fourteen contestants, many of the exhibits being of a high order of merit. Among the poultry exhibits (which were very small in number) were two splendid exhibits of Pekin ducks shown by Mrs and Miss Davis, and some birds suitable for table poultry shown by Mr Limbrick — two Minorca - Laugshan cockerels, four months old, and a Langshan hen, which were awarded a certificate of merit. Spec'al mention must be made of a pile game cock and hen sent for exhibition by Mr C. N. Raine, of Manaia. They are capital birds. Owing to the length of the prize list, we must refrain from further comment in reference tc other classes not touched upon. Mr McGuire, M.H.8., in opening the show, congratulated the Society, who had every reason to feel satisfied with the work they had done. He said it was a pleasure to work with the officers. The Society was forging to the front with great rapidity, and kindred societies would have to look to their laurels. He warmly approved of a two days' show, which would afford the public an opportunity of inspecting the exhibits--exhibits worthy ■of inspection — and dwelt on the good work the Society had done. The work of such an organisawas highly educational. After a glowing reference to our scenery, Mr McGuire referred to the aptitude of New Zealand boys, who had astonished University professors in Great Britain and Ireland. While smart at learning, they were also to the front in athletics and in war. While praising the boys, the speaker did not forget the girls, who were graceful and refined, as a result of the refining influence of their mothers and the systematic orderliness of their homes. Mr McGuire then called for cheers for the mothers, for the success of the Society, and for the President, Secretary, and General Committee. The response was hearty, and the show was then declared open. The following is the prize list : — POT PLANTS. Judge: J. Groom. (Window grown plants), owners of greenhouses not being eligible.
