ELTHAM.
BOROUGH COUNCIL. (from our kbsidbnt agent.) The ordinary meeting of the Counoil was held on Monday evening. There were present : — His Worship the Mayor (Mr G. W. Baylor), Crs Potts, Thomson, Allan, Blackball, Bunciman, Fitch, Yon Stunner, W. H. McGarry, Graves. FIHH BRIGADE. A letter was read from tbe Hawera Fire Brigade, offering a manual engine' for £100. Cr Fitch favoured taking the engine oft a long lease with purchasing clause. J Cr Potts pointed out that it would be * necessary to make wells, and a new*engine would be preferable to an old one. He urged the formation of a bucket brigade. The Counoil decided that the offer could not be entertained. LOAN. The Treasury informed the Council' that the matter of tbe proposed £20,000 loan for water and drainage would be attended to. SANITABY. The Sanitary Inspector reported on the condition of the borough. The report was adopted. RAGWORT. P. H. Pease wrote in reference to theragwort nuisance, stating that he would be pleased to pay for an advertisement urging owners to eradicate tbe pest. Cr Potts produced an article from the- 1 Stab, and pointed out that tbe local authority had nothing to do with thematter. PRESENT. It was stated that Mr Keen had' given the nightsoil notice box free to< tbe Counoil. A vote of thanks was passed, (Potts' -Fitob.) BURGESS BOLL. The Clerk was empowered to prepare new burgess list. PETITION. A petition was read from settlers- in Castle street asking the Counoil to make representations to have the street included in the postal delivery. The Postmaster - General will be written to. BY-LAWS. It was resolved that the solicitor be instruoted to proceed with by-laws, and that they be printed. RAILWAY. Cr Blackhall moved the motion of whioh be had given notice, That the Government be asked to place oe the estimates a sum to connect Eltbam and Opnnake by rail. He considered this would benefit tbe town and district, and would be a step in the right direction. Cr Allan seconded. Cr Graves suggested a public meeting, as councillors did not know enough of the pros and oens. /-"v The motion, after discussion, was ~ x * carried. . ■ post office. Cr Blackhall moved that the Post-master-General be asked to separate the post office from the railway station, and erect the former on a site to be chosen by the Department. Seconded by Cr Fitch, and carried. The Mayor and Cr MoGarry were appointed a deputation to wait on Sir JG. Ward on the matter. The Council adjourned.
