RIFLE SHOOTING.

At the Wanganui and West Coast Rifle Association Meeting, Volunteer A. C. Atkinson was the runner-up for the championship, won by Corporal Winslade, of Wanganui, being four behind the champion. Atkinson received Mr D. McFarlane's trophy and the Licensed Victuallers' gold and silver medal, and Volunteer Carey (Patea Rifles) the Association trophy and Licensed Victu. allers' Association's silver medal. Describing the finish, the Chronicle says : — When the twenty-five men went to the 700 yards range to fire for the championship, the scores of the top men were as follows: Atkinson 220, Okey 220, Winslade 220, Carey 216, Hulbert 212, Purnell 211, Needham 211, Scott 210, A. Drummond 210, Parkes 207, Thorpe 206. The chief interest centred round Atkinson, Okey, and Winslade, one of whom was looked upon as certain to fill the coveted position. Atkinson made 38, his score being 4435343345. Okey made 32, so was out of the running for first place. Winslade began firing after Atkinson and Okey had finished, and an eager little crowd gathered in the vicinity of No. 4 mound. His sighting shots were a magpie and an outer. Then his shots were 353555453. At this point he was on a level with Atkinson for first place, and only needed to find the target in order to win. This he easily did, his last shot being a 4. He thus won by 4 points, and was heartily applauded for his achievement.
