The Queenslanders attached to Brigadier-General Plumer's column captured twelve Boers at Wackstromm. On the 19th, eleven Boers surrendered at Balmoral. Commander Christian Botha, cousin of General Louid Botha, a prominent rebel who was captured in November last, has been sentenced to ten years' imprisonment, and been fined £500, or an additional year in prison. Private William Robson Davis, Seventh New Zealand Contingent, has died of wounds. Received February 23, 5.8 p.m. London, February 22. Lord Kitchener reports that Colonel Parks' mounted force, with 300 National Burgher Scouts, surprised a force at Nooitgedaoht, capturing 164, including Cornet Dv Toit and Lieutenant Viljoen. There were no British- casualties. Received February 24, 1.16 a.m. London, February 23. A crowded and enthusiastic meeting of Dutch and English at Bloemfontein denounced the foreign slanders, and recorded appreciation of the humanity and good conduct of the British troops. NEWS OF DE WET AND STEYN. Received February 24, 8.51 am. London, February 23. The Standard Bays that De Wet, with four hundred men, cut the wire entanglements west of Lindley on the 10th, losing eleven, and thea returned to Liebenberg, on the Vlei River, north or Reitz. He roughly treats Transvaalers who are disposed to surrender. The Free Statera are more irreoon-
cilable. Steyn's influence with the Free Staters exceeds De Wet's. Steyn takes the greatest precautions against capture, and is always accompanied by a bodyguard.
