A FATAL FIRE.
IT STARTS IN AN ARMOURY. EIGHTEEN LIVES LOST. Received February 24, 1.6 a.m. Nbw York, February 23. A fire occurred in the armoury of the 71st Regiment in New York, and spread to the Park Avenue Hotel. Eighteen persons were killed and fifty injured. Great damage was done to property. Received February 24, 8.55 a.m. New York, February 23. Within half-an-hour after the fire was discovered, the gun-powder magazines exploded, sending bullets in all directions. It was not expected the hotel would catch fire. The victims were chiefly guests, who were unable to escape from the blazing elevator shafts. Tbe electric light failed, plunging tbo passages in darkness. The damage to the armoury amounted to 650,000 dollars, and to the hotel to a million dollars.
