NEWS AND NOTES.

It is reported that two of the Normanby hotels are about to change hands, Mr Brand, the Government Veterinarian, who has been in the Wairarapa district for twelve months, has tendered his resignation. As an outcome of the inqueßt held on the body of an infant, we understand the police will (under the Infants' Life Protection Act) take action against the owner of the house in whioh the death occurred. A sly grog-stlling case, in which natives are said to be concerned, will occupy the attention of the Police Court next week. At the S.M. Court, Feilding, Joseph Smith, on remand for attempted murder of his wife, was admitttd to bail, and liberated, but was bound over to keep the peace for six month, also on bail. At the Nnrmanby Town Board meeting n Tuesday, the Hawera County Electric Light and Power Syndicate's proposal to light Norman by with 20 lights of 16 candlepower each for £40 per annum was considered, when it was resolved, That this Board will accept 15 lights of 16 candlepower each, in terms of the proposals made in the syndicate's letter of 7th January. Mr R. 0. Teropler, the Organising Secretary of the Farmers' UDion, has received a communication from the General Manager of the Commercial Union Insurance Company, notifying that members of the Farmers' Union covering their own risks against accident are covered, whether on or off their own farms, if employed on work connected with their business. This is satisfactory, aB up to now it has been a matter of uncertainty in the minds of many. A drunken man tho other day fell from the second Btory of a building in Melbourne, crashed on the verandah, and rebounded into the roadway, where he was found by a constable, who locked him up on a charge of drunkenness. After sleeping off the effects of his libations, he awoke, and merely complained of feeling a bit stiff. He had reoeived no more than a Blight shock to the Byßtem. _ The story has been current in military circles (says a London correspondent) that Sir Hector Macdonald got into the bad books of the War Office beoause of certain frank and outspoken remarks of his during the Australian tour. These remarks were said to have intensified the feeling which was born of certain bluffly outspoken criticisms which he uttered while in South Africa— criticisms whioh were known to have reached the ear of the Commander-in-Chief himself. However, it has been ascertained that, so far from his statement being true, Sir Hector is to be removed from his present oom1 mand in India in order to take up one of a more responsible character. The new command whioh he is to reoeive will still have a sub-divisional character, but a graver duty attaches to it. Between Hunterville and Taihape, on the North Island Trunk line, a large population is to be found employed on the railway and road works. The men are mostly past middle age, but they are tolerably strong and vigorous. A large percentage are at present out of employment, and the appearance _ of the townships and theiv surroundings is indicative of poverty rather than destitution. Most of tho children attending the Mangaweka Sohool are barefooted, but they are clean and look healthy. The buildings are usually Bmall and unpainted, and the fences, gardens, and surroundings have a non -permanent appearance. Many of these have no boarded floors, and for doors screens are erected. Altogether, the homes of these workers are susceptible of improvement. — N.Z. Times. A Masterton sportsman, who is alwayß meeting with wonderful adventures, states that he was out shooting a few days ago at the Coast, and that while " potting "at a rabbit near the banks of a lagoon, the gun burst, and that the shot killed the rabbit; the right half of the gun flew off and placed a swan Jiors de combat ; the left half gently reminded a duok in the vioinity that it was time he shuffled off the mortal coil ; while the stook flew over his shoulder, struck a stump, and, rebounding like a boomerang, hit him on the head, laying him unoonbcioub for a tune. He assures us that all the foregoing absolutely took place. We don't doubt it in the least. — Masterton Times. , We call attention to the alteration in the ' Gold Flake Cigarettes advertisement. The quality of the tobacco has made them one of the most popular brands in the market.
