Auckland, February 18. The departure of the Ninth Contingent from Auckland will take place on 15th March. POINTED QUERIES. Received February 19, 9.31 a.m. London, February 18. Wellington, February 19. The Government have received advice of the death, from en trie fever, at Carijinas, of Trooper Hugh C. Gillies (Dunedin), Seventh Contingent. Two troopers are reported dangerously ill, George Spring (Linwood), Sixth Contingent, at Carijinas, and F. J. Chambers (Woodend), Seventh Contingent, at Heilbron. Mr J. B. Gonnett has been elected chairman of New Plymouth Harbour Board. At a meeting of Wanganui citizens it was resolved that the Borough Council provide £1650 for additions to the present Fire Brigade plant. The Brigade intends to procure a fire engine and a motor ladder carriage. It was derided to invite th--: United Fire Brigades' Association to hoM the next demonstration in Wanganui. * The various Boards of Eduoation throughout New Zealand have been auked to assist the oause of the Teachers' Provident Fund, by retaining when requested i per cent of the salaries of teaohers in' their district. The replies received, so far, have all given a gei,eral support to the scheme, while several "have courteously and emphatically agreed to assist the teaohers in this most important matter, in every way that lies in tbeir power, notably Southland, South Canterbury, and Westland. Beplies are still expected from several Boards.
