NEWS AND NOTES.
The awards in the Wellington fntniture trade dispute, painters' dispute, and tin plate and metal workers' have been lodged in court with the Clerk of Awards. These awards come into operation on the 24th inst, and are for a period of two years. The meeting called by the Christchurch Trades and Labour Counoil in the open air on Saturday night to protest against the action of the Millers' Trust, who have now raised the price of flour to £8, was postponed owing to the heavy rain. The Mana arrived at Paten, from Wellington, on Sunday, and sailed for Wellington yesterday with 2000 boxes of butter and 30 bales of wool. It is stated that the amount to be paid by the British Government to Charles Lilly white, as compensation for his wrongful arrest on a charge of having committed a murder at Colchester, is £600. This is supposed to cover a year's salary at his trade, and his law exoenses. The Home Government will also pay his passage back to New Zealand, where he intends to settle. There is every indication of a continued abundance of feed in Hawke's Bay, and farmers in that district are holding on to their sheep and stock. In fact, buyers from the Hawke's Bay have been constant visitors at sales in Masterton and other districts. — Masterton Times. ALLAYS THE PAIN. Charlotte A.
