BIFLE SHOOTING.

The weather for opening the new rifle * range on Friday afternoon was not too inviting, there being a strong wind blowing and occasional showers. However, sixteen Bhootists put in an appearance, and many ladies, also visitors. Mr MoGnire, M.H.8., in a neat Bpeech, declared the butts open, and fired the first shot, luckily making a " boll." Afternoon tea was provided by the ladies. At noon, the weather looked so threatening that it was announced- there would be no shooting, bat when Mr McGuite turned up in town word was sent round to muster at the butts. It waa decided to offer only three prizes, those of Messrs Hunt, Lewis, and Slattery. , Results were as under : 5 shots at 200

Most of the other scores were by new members. On Friday noxt, another three prizes will be shot for.

On Wednesday night last, the Brass Bane and Waimate Football Club entertained Mr; Tait, late lessee of the Manaia Hotel, at i monster social and danoe. There were about fifty couples present. Just before sapper, Mr T. R. Waltbn, Seoretary of tbl Band, thanked Mrs Tait for the great interest taken by her and energy displayed in farthering the band. Mr Hunt, PresiJ dent of the Football Club, eulogised Mrs Tait's great kindness to the football teams, and handed her, od behalf of the Club, a handsome finely wrought gold muff chain. Mr Bennett responded on behalf of Mrs Tait, thankiog the speakers for the nice things said and the club for the present. Dancing was kept up till about 2 a.m., and a really good time spent. Musia was supplied by Mr E, 8. Walton (piano) and N. M. McCarthy (violin), assisted by the Misses Connell and Jack and Jas. Tait with extras. The band opened the dance by supplying the musio for the first item. Mr Franks danced an Irish jig, which was greatly appreciated. The dance throughout was a big success. I am assured by settlers residing at Awatuna, whose farms are included in the area recently merged into the new Egmont county? that steps will be taken by them to endeavour to get the bill amended in the direction of permitting them to still remain nnder the jurisdiction of the Waimate Boad Board. Of course, this will mean a matter of altering the boundaries of the county, if given effect to. The Band played at the Monument on Satnrday night. Mr Walter Lewis will be shortly removing to Wanganui with his family, being unable to secure house accommodation in either Hawera or New Plymouth.
