THE MATAKAWA DROWNING FATALITY.

FURTHER PARTICULARS.

(per press association.) Auckland, February 14. Further particulars of the drowniog fatality show that tbe two Maori girls were paddling about in a canoe opposite the Matakawa, and had gone down tbe estuary with tbe tide. In attempting to return they were unable to stem the current, which was then running out, with the result that the canoe was carried out in the direction of the Heads. The girls, finding the canoe unmanageable, and having only one paddle, decided at the sighc of the breakers to leave the oaDoe and swim for the shore. They dived off and made a desperate effort to reach the land. Only one of the girls reaped shore. The other, gamely struggling, was carried out to sea by the current. The girl who got ashore landed in a thoroughly exhausted condition. The survivor is now recovering. The girl drowned was a daughter of a well-known native named Jacobs.
