PUBLIC BATHS.

While in Wanganui recently, Mr Clarson, architect, had an interview with Mr Mowtell, and as a result prepared a sketch plan of baths which, while being commodious and up-to-date in every particular, would come well within the Council's estimate of cost. The sketch shows a public bath 75ft by 40ft, with a depth of from 4ft to Bft, and provides for diving steps, swimming crane, and diving shoot (the latter is a contrivance used in the teaching of the art of diving). A bath for children would be 40 feet wide with a depth of 2ft 6in. Behind tbe main bath would be dressing boxes, two showers and lavatories, and at one side more dressing boxes (the grand total is twenty) and two open sheds. There would be raised seats either side from which Bwimming contests could be viewed. In front would be the caretaker's dwelling, in which would comprise four rooms, pantry, scullery, etc., as .well as waiting room and office. The bath would be of concrete, with concrete flooring. The dimensions of the proposed bath are said to be equal to those of the largest in the colony, and the cost would run into something approaching four figures. The Bath Committee of the Council and Mr Clarson will have a consultation at an early date, and it is probable the work will be soon put in hand.
