THE ARMY MEAT CONTRACTS.

Received February 11, 1.6 a.m. Melbourne, February 10,

The Right Hon. E. Barton (Federal Premier) has received a despatch from the Right Hon. J. Chamberlain in reference to the meat contracts. He states that only three tenders were received providing for distribution to troops on the spot, which is required as of primary importance. The lowest was from a firm closely associated with Australia and New Zealand. In order to secure the interest of tbe colonies, the Secretary for War, before accepting, obtained an assurance in writing that so far as possible supplies would be drawn from Australia and New Zealand in preference to the Argentine. The colonial tenders were partial, and for delivery at base portß only.
