GREAT FIRES IN AMERICA.
SEVERAL LIVES LOST.
ENORMOUS DAMAGE.
Received February 11. 0.53 a.m. New York, February 10. A fire broke out at Paterson, New Jersey, during a gale, and destroyed twenty-six blocks in the business section, and a portion of the residential quarter. Five churches, a hospital, and three newspaper offices were destroyed. The damage is estimated at ten million dollars. One man was killed, twenty injured, and a thousand rendered homeless. Another fire destroyed forty-five thousand barrels of flour, together with the Liebig Valley Railway Company's pier at Jersey City. The damage amounts to half a million dollars. Ten men were burned to death by the destruction of the Empire Hotel at St. Louis.
