After a delay of an hour, owing to rain, play was resumed, but sixteen minutes only had elapsed when it came down heavily, and play was stopped till after lunch. The weather is fine for the cricket match. In the cricket match this afternoon neither Wanganui nor Taranaki will be represented by their full strength. Wanganui are several men short, and Taranaki are without the services of Pratt and Cole. Fred. Midlane, whose big scores for the Phoenix Club have been a feature in Wellington cricket, in the last .couple of seasons, will leave on Saturday for Sydney, where he intends to try his luck in " bigger " cricket than he can obtain here. Midlane is in his nineteenth year. The Manawatu Cricket Association has been accepted as an affiliated union to the New Zealand Cricket Council. Eady has left for Sydney to practice for the fourth test match. It is said Hawke's Bay Association will not grant Trott leave to play in the North v. South match. A most extraordinary incident occurred during a cricket match at Melbourne, says Jack Worrall in the Referee, and of all the peculiar circumstances that have happened at cricket it is certainly one of the strangest. Wright, the Jolimont batsman, was batting to Stewart, and snicked a fast ball into the hands of the wicket-keeper, who failed to hold it, the ball rebounding into the wickets. The bails were sent flying, but the ball stuck between two stumps. The Saints' wioket-keeper carefully abstracted the ball, and appealed for a catch, whioh was allowed by the umpire. I never heard of such an occurrence before. The decision has given rise to a great deal of argument, many old cricketers maintaining that the man was not out. Upon what they base their conclusions is incomprehensible to mo, for if he had been out of his creases in the first place the batsman I would have been run out, as Hayward I was in Adelaide. Of coarse, the man ' was out.
