A BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

We quite endorse the remarks of tbe correspondent who yesterday wrote on the subject of beautifying tho town. It is now longer ago than we care to rem6inbar since tho Cjtak first wrote on tfiis subject. When a borough was projected we urged that one of the first thing 3to be undertaken should be a judieioun plan of improvement of reserves, and tree planting in streets and tnaic road?, bufc oth9r matters have pressed on tha attention of townep^oplo more urgently, and therefore little hns been done — practically nothing in fact. Every now and then when reEulfcg are seen aa in Mew Plymouth, and places farther afield, Hawera dwellers recognise thai; valuable time has been lost, aud some one speaks out, but it is hard to arouse general enthusiasm, and the work is too much for a few. Just now a well known resident has been privately urging an effort to establish an ornamental recreation ground, and tfe understand a meeting may be convened to consider his proposal, We wish ifc success. If the Borough Council could see its way now that it has pretty well got through the water and drainage problem to take up some general scheme of improving its reserves and sports grounds it would, we are confident, be doing a great service. However, in the meantime, privat9 efforts are praiseworthy. At any rte they help to stir up the public conscience, which, ifc must be conceded, is somewhat sluggich.
