CRICKET.

ENGLISHMEN v. NEW SOUTH

WALES.

Beceived January 31, 8.13 p.m.

Sydney, January 81.

It is ideal cricketing weather, with a light cool breeze. The attendance is fair. New South Wales, winning the toss, batted, and, with the exception of Poidevin, gave a sound display of consistent scoring. Bobson, Blythe, and Barnes stood out of the English team, which was lamentably deficient in bowling. Up to the tea adjournment, six men were tried, and changes were being worked frequently. The scores are as follows : — New South Wales. — Ist innings. ■ C. Gregory, b Braund 45 i Hopkins, c Jones, b Jessop ... 40 Trumper, 1.b.w., b Braund ... 35 Poidevin, b Gunn 1 S. Gregory, not out ... 106 Duff, b Jessop 50 Noble, not out ... 52 Extras 8 Total for five wickets ... 837 Beceived January 31, 11.2 p.m. Sydney, January 31. Some surprise was manifested when it was found C. Bannerman was umpire for the Englishmen in place of Crockett, whom Maclaren selected for the tour. It appears some members of the English team were dissatisfied with several of his recent decisions, and made the change. A letter has been written to Crockett, and already signed by members of the New South Wales section engaged in the test matches, and will be signed by representatives of other States when they arrive here, justifying the individual decisions to which exception has been taken, and expressing a hope that in future matches he will be found umpiring. A good deal of feeling is manifested in the affair, and it is proposed, if not in the Sydney test match, then in tho Melbourne one, to appoint Crockett umpire for the Australians.

Christohurch, January 31.

Tho secretary of the New. Zealand Cricket Council, in accordance with a resolution of tho Council, has written to Lord Hawke suggesting that he should bring an amateur English cricket team to Now Zealand, and has also written to the Agent-General asking him to do what he can to further the project.

Mr Ohlsen, of Auckland, has been appointed sole selector of the North Island team to meet the South Island representatives in Wellington at the end of February.
