HAWEKA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

A meeting of the Committee of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce was held on Friday evening. Present — Messrs Halliwell (chair), Wilson, Worsfold, Ekdahl, Hardley, J. Hicks, J. Foy (secretary). Besolved, That a letter be sent to General Manager Post and Telegraph Department urging the granting of exchange of the property off High street, and opposite the Hawera Club, with property at the other end of the town, with a view of the borough acquiring the same for the purposes of a public garden. Besolved, That letter be forwarded to Department requesting that the telephone rates to private house 3 where there is also a business connection be reduced, the two connections to be £8 in lieu of JE10 ; that letters be forwarded to tho principal Chambers throughout the colony suggesting united action in the matter. Besolved, That a telegram be sent to the Premier strongly approving of the action he has taken in connection with contracts for supply of frozen meat for South Africa.

A lengthy discussion took place as to railway freights, and the paucity of details that were supplied locally as to how such freights were made up ; and j also as to the necessity of being able to ! pay the Customs duties here instead of remitting to Patea, New Plymouth, i and other ports. A wire was directed to be sent to the Secretary Fire Underwriters' Association, Wellington, as to time that would suit that body to receive deputation from this Chamber, and suggesting Thursday OK Friday next.

A lengthy discussion took place as to fire insurance and the paying of refunds to those who paid under the higher rates from May to October of last yoar, and unofficial information having been received that one insurance company carrying on business in Marton had paid refunds, it was resolved, That Secretary write Marton Chamber of Commerce for information thereon. Besolved, That letter be written to Taranaki Underwriters' Association re bringing the* Hawera case before the Council in Wellington next week, and asking that all correspondence received by that body be taken down to Wellington and laid before Council. It was resolved that members visit the beach (zigzag) on Wednesday week, to see what could be done in the way of improving the approach to the bench, and that the following Wednesday they visit the Waingongoro.
