RIFLE SHOOTING.

(per press association.) Stratford, January 31. The Premier has accepted the patronship of the Taranaki Rifle Association.

At New Plymouth, yesterday, some splendid scores were put up in the return match between the Taranaki Rifles and the rest of the Battalion. Color-Sergeant Okey came out on top, with the magnificent total of 100 points out of 105. Captain Okey was close at hand with 99, and Corpl. Armitage was third with 96. These were all in the Rifles team. Captain Taunton, on the Battalion side, was next highest with 94. The match resulted in a win for the Rifles by 85 points, the scores being 730 and 695. The average individual Bcore for the winning team was 91.25, and for the losers 86.8. Taken together, says the News, the shooting of the two teams is considered to be pretty nearly a record for the colony. Lieut. Paterson, Hawera, made 83.

Tabanaei Rifles.

Captains Okey and Taunton and Corporal Armitage all put on the possible at 500 yards. The deciding match will be fired at Hawera, but the date is not yet fixed. Wellington, January 30. The Defence Department has made a grant of JG2OO to each volunteer district in the colony, such money to be expended in encouragement of rifle shooting. It is stipulated by the Department that all competitions must be open to members of the Permanent Artillery, militia, volunteers, rifle clubs, and civilians.
