AUSTRALIAN PRODUCE MARKET

Sydney, January 22. Oats, local Algerian, 2s 6d to 2s 7d; Tasmanian, 3s 3d to 3a 4d. Potatoes, £5 to £6 12s 6d. Onions, Victorian, £5 ss. Butter, creamery, lid. Cheese, New Zealand, large white, 7d. Bacon, 6£d to BJd. Hams, New Zealand, 9Jd to lOd. FROZEN MEAT FOR SOUTH AFRICA. The South African Supply and Cold Storage Company, Limited, has been inviting tenders in Australia for monthly supplies of 1500 tons ox beef and 500 tOT 3 wether mutton, c.i.f. Durban, tort Elizabeth, and (or) Capetown. The South African Supply Company is the concern that showed profits of over a million sterling for the year ended 30th Jane last. The financial strength of the company is unquestioned, and it is well able to carry out any of its engagements. It will be noted that the demand in South Africa is for beef rather than mutton, and the whole oan be easily met by the producers of Australia. After all, 2000 tons of beef a month is a very limited demand, and New Zealand could not compete against Australia. It is a question of price rather than extreme quality, and in this our neighbors can beat us. There is a report current that New Zealand meat companies have been approached, but the prices named are not sufficiently attractive to result in business.— Post.
