WHAKAMARA.

(from a correspondent, i

On the 20th January last a school concert was held in the Whakamara Hall. The weather, of course, did its level beßt to prevent its being a success, but in spite of cold winds and heavy rain there was a good audience. The school children are to be complimented ' on the manner in which they rendered the various songs, etc., and thanks is due to Mr and Mrs Walters for the trouble they took. The happy faces, ' and especially the bright dresses, gave the stage a very animated appearance, and great pleasure was derived from the fact that everything went off so smoothly. After the concert, supper was handed round, and then dancing commenced . and was kept up until it was time to round up the cows.

At last the much-talked of metalling of our roads has commenced. On Monday last the first loads came out from the shingle pit. Already three chains have been metalled. ' Next Christmas will see the contract completed.

Factory matters are in a very satisfactory state, although, if this spell of dry weather continues, there is a likelihood of the water giving ouS and putting a stop to operations.

Whakamara can now boast a cricket club, so if any team in Hawera wishes to make a day of it, they can come and get a game and a beatiug. The hay-making has been rather the rule than the exception this year in here, nearly everyone making some. The weather having given every facility for harvesting it, it is all in.
