In tbe Homb6 of Commons, Mr Walton's amendment to the Address-in-Beply, that it was'esseDtial to safecuard British commercial and political interests in Persia, was withdrawn, after Lord Cranborne, Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs, had explained that the policy was to maintain the status quo in Asia and to preserve the integrity of Persia. It was impossible to abandon British asoeuaanoy in the Persian Gulf, as the southern provinces were bordering India.
