CRICKET.

THIRD* TEST MATCH. ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIA.

AUSTRALIANS WIN BY FOUR

WICKETS.

Received January 23, 7.54 p.m. Adelaide, January 23.

Cricket was continued in bright pleasant weather, the attendance being 3000. Jessop and Blythe bowled, the former to the end which was considerably damaged. The bowling was so accurate and the fielding so brilliant that the batsmen were disinclined to take any risks. It took twenty minutes to make four runs, and in half an hour Trumble added only one. With 239 up, Braund came on, ' and pegged away at the bad place, not, however, with his usual slows. Lilley stood back at short stop, and Braund rooked in fast ones, but they did not achieve success, and Jessop relieved him. Darling hit him to the boundary, but in the same over, while trying another hit down the ground, he was brilliantly caught by Hayward at midon. Darling was batting for three and a half hours, and made a great effort for the Australians. His defence was splendid, with occasional well-placed hits. His score included seven 4's. The fifth wicket fell for 255.

At 273, Braund relieved Blythe, this time bowling his customary slows. Noble ran hinißelf out through starting for a run when the ball was hit straight to Jessop at cover.

Armstrong simply kept up his wicket while Trumble made the runs. When Armstrong was eight, and seven runs were wanted to win, Maclaren in the slips missed a difficult low chance off Blythe. The next four runs come slowly, but the match was finished with three byes off Jessop, the Australians winning by four wickets.

Trumble played a masterly, faultless innings of three hours' duration, and hit seven 4's. The fielding throughout was exceedingly brilliant. Australians. — Second Innings. The Herald says, regarding the notable victory of the Australians, that the conditions were equal, but, if anything, favoured tbe visitors, who had first use of the wicket. The loss of Barnes was set off by three Australians being crippled. The Telegraph says it was a very creditable victory indeed, and it i 3 not boastful to say that it was accountable by something more than mere luck.
