STAR I. v. ELTHAM I.

(By Rikihana.) The Stars secured an easy win in the Cup match played on the Recreation Ground on Wednesday afternoon. Play started at 3.20, nearly an hour late, which may be said to be rather the rule than the exception. The pitch was In fair condition, but the outfield was, to say the least of it, rough. The Stars' total of 159 was certainly worth another 50 or 60. The Stars went in first, and McCarthy and O. Webby made a great stand. When 75 were recorded, Crawshaw found Webby's weak point of defence. H. Elliott followed, McCarthy welcoming him with a grand hit for 5 clean over the outside fence. After scoring 10, H. Elliott was run out — 2 for 106. Haggett was caught at the wickets by Bellve for one, after which the wickets quickly fell, the total being 159, McCarthy (not out) 96. The innings occupied exactly two hours. * Crawshaw and Bennett went in for Eltham, H. Elliott and Haggett bowling. Haggett clean-bowled Bennett— 1 for 5. Crump had exceedingly hard luck in being run out — 2 for 7. H. Elliott beat Crawshaw with a trimmer — 3 for 12. The Rev Chappell was smartly stumped by McCarthy — 4 for 12. Robison, while running, was cleverly thrown out by McCarthy — 5 for 22. Bellve had but a short life, H. Elliott beating him — 6 for 29. Another trimmer from H. Elliott dismissed Nichol — 7 for 37. Time for drawing stumps getting near, McCarthy, who had been wicket keeping, took off the pads and relieved Haggett with the ball. Then the end came very quickly, the visitors being all disposed of for the small total of 46. On paper, the Elthamites appeared to have anything bub a poor team, but they evidently lacked practice, which, together with a good share of bad luck, was responsible for tho poor display.
