A. FORCE OF ONE THOUSAND

Wellington, January 21. The Government received an intimation from the Secretary of State for the Colonies that His Majesty's Government will be glad to have another thousand men raised in New Zealand on the same terms as the Eighth. The Premier has consulted members of Parliament by telegraph, and has already received replies from the majority approving the idea. He haß, therefore, cabled to the Imperial Government that another contingent will be raised. Becruiting will be started at ence. A. larger proportion will be allotted to country districts than in former oases.

The New Plymouth defence authorities received a communication requesting that two more men be sent at once to fill vacancies in the Eighth Contingent. W. A. Ooombridge, of Opunake, will be one.
