Wellington, October 23.

The first shipment of coal trom Pakawau, Golden Bay, was brought to Wellington yesterday by the steamer Opawa, about 70 tons being landed.

A conference was held this evening, between the Premier, the Native Minister, and a number of representative Maoris. Most of the tribes were represented. The object of the conference was to disouss the boundaries of districts, and to arrange other matters with a view to giving affect to the Maoii Councils Act and Maori Lands Administration Aot passed during the recent session of Parliament. Satisfactory work in tbiß direction wbb done. Mr Seddon, in his speech, at the conclusion of which he wa3 heartily cheered, said that a new day had dawned for the Maori people.

Dunedin, Ootober 24.

The ship Antares has been detained here for five days owing to two of the crew, who are Germans, having deserted. The captain is required to give a bond for £100 for each of the men, and the captain requires to communicate with the owners. The German Consul made application to the Government to allow the vessel to proceed to Auckland, with her original cargo fron} Hamburg, but he was informed the vessel could not be cleared .from Dunedin till the law was complied with. Six men escaped, but four were recaptured.
