[Mr Bherman, after a distinguished career, retired from politics in June, 1898, at which date he was Secretary of State of U.S. He was a son of Judge Charles M. Sherman, and after two years' servioe in the Engineer's corps studied law, and became a barrister in 1844. He practised at the Bar till 1854, when he was elected a member of the House of Representatives of the U.S. In 1861, he was made a Senator, in 1877 beoame Seoretary of the Treasury, and in 1897 Secretary of State. His publications consist chiefly of speeches relating to finance, ourrenoy and taxation, a number of essays, and an autobiography.]
