The House met at 7.30 p.m. QUESTIONS.
In reply to a question, tbe Premier said he had replied to a communication from the Premier of Tasmania, asking that he (Mr Seddon) should join the other Premiers in sending to the Secretary of Statp for the Colonies a cable congratulating the Government on the success of arms in South Africa, with a view to influencing the elections in Britain in favour of the Conservative Party. Mr Seddon said he had replied stating that he thought it out of place to interfere in the matter, and that he had already congratulated Lord Roberts on tbe success of our arms.
SECOND READINGS.
The Land for Settlement Consolidation Bill was read a second time, pro forma.
The Premier moved the second reading of the Land and Income Assessment Bill, which, he explained, merely altered tho machinery of the Act, The Bill was read a second time.
NATIVE LANDS.
The Native Land Administration Bill (No. 2) was read a first time.
PDBLIO HEALTH.
Hon. J. G. Ward, with Messrs W. Fraser and Laurenson, were appointed to confer with the Council on the amendments made by the latter in the Public Health Bill. "
LAND AND INCOME.
In commilteo on ibe Land and Income Amendment Bill, the iuterprutation clause was postponed. An amendment was made to clause 33, defining an absentee as a person who has been absent from the colony one instead of three years. The bill passed. The Machinery Amendment Bill was reported with amendments, read a third time, and passed. The House rose at 12.15 a.m.
