SOUTH ISLAND RAILWAYS.
(PER PRBSS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, September 14. A deputation of South Island members waited on the Premier and the Hon. W. Hall-Jones this morning. They stated that ihey were not antagonistio to the proseoution of the North Island Main Trunk line, but they had a duty to perform to their constituents, and objeotea to that railway receiving unfair advantage over other equally important lines in the South. The Premier said it was a mistake to uuppose that he intended to give the North Island Trunk line an excessive sum to the disadvantage of the railways oE the South. Referring to the statoment that had been published to the effeot that he had promised to vote £350,000 for the North Island line ihis session, he gave it an emphatic denial. What he proposed to do was to give a slight preferenoe to the North Island line, and he would test the sincerity of North Island members who advocated the line by reducing the vote for other lines there b enable that to be done.
