Hawera Choral Society.
* OPENING PERFORMANCE. On Friday evening next the Choral Society produce at the Opera House Handel's world-known oratorio " The Messiah." Since the Society's inception a few months ago there has been no indication wanting that whatever was to be attempted by them would be carried out with zeal and thoroughness, alike creditable to themselves and the town to which they belong. At the commencement many raised the objection that, such a -work as Handel's masterpiece was altogether beyond a town the size of Hawera. So it would have been under ordinary circumstances. The Society, however, is composed of really enthusiastic members as well as possesssing great strength numerically, and after hearing a rehearsal at the Opera House last evening there can be no two opinions as to ability. The choruses were taken with a vim that at once bore evidence of careful and intelligent practice, whilst the solos are all in good hands. The effect will be enhanced by an orchestra of between 15 and 20 strong, with Mr Hutchens as conductor and Mr Cook(New Plymouth) as first violinist. The soloists will be Mesdames Green wood,J. A. Goodson, Straok, Parsons, and Foster, and Messrs McAlplne, Batten, and Foster. The conductor, Mr Foster, has wichout doubt worked up the oratorio splendidly. The Society has not been promoted for tke purpose of making money, but simply want to make both ends meet. Therefore a low charge for admittance has been made, namely 2s and Is. What is wanted is appreciation by the Hawera musical public of their endeavors to foster the musical talent whioh has hitherto had but indifferent means of asserting itself. This they may do by filling the Opera House on Friday evening. The society have been most assiduous in their practices, and are deserving of it.
