Temperance Convention

PALMERSTON N., May 25. A Temperance Convention was opened yesterday and the following resolutions were carried :— That this; convention desires to call the attention of the Government to tbe disgraceful laxity in tbe administration of the liquor laws throughout tbe colony and demands the immediate removal of J.P.s who instigated their violation in the Olutba district, and nrgeß generally that it is necessary tbat administrative and legislative steps be taken to compel Magistrates and police to make the enforcement of snob laws something better than a faroe ; that this meeting reoogniaing the large and growing share in the evils of tha liquor traffio for wbiob drinking clubs are responsible, demands that these olubs be plaoed on tbe same footing with regard to Sunday observance, limitation of hours, polioe supervision and popular control as publio bouses. A publio meeting attended by 1200 people was held in connection with the Temperance convention, the Mayor i preßiding. Addresses were delivered, and the proceedings were most enthusiastic throughout. It has been resolved to request tbe Government Railway Department to consider the desirability in future engagements of managers and officials generally to prefer men of total abstinence principles, otber things being equal.
