PARIS, June 25. The assassin is named Giovanni Santo, and is an Italian. Tho populace of Lyons are wrecking the Italian cafe's, in revenge, and it is probable that blood will be spilt. The wound was in the region of the liver. The President lingered three hours and a quarter, and died at a quarter to one a.m. He had previously visited the exhibition, and held a reception. Thence he had a triumphal progress to tbe theatre. High festivities were to be held, and the streets were resounding with cries of •' Vive Carnot !" when suddenly Santo jumped on to the step of the carriage under the pretence of presenting a petition, and drew a dagger, which was concealed for the moment by the paper packet. On receiving tbe fatal blow, Carnot sank backwards, and, uttering a groan, became livid. The Prefect of Lyons, who was in the carriage, knocked the assassin down. Tbe Hreßidenb was removed to the Prefecture in an unconscious state, but recovered when the doctors probed the wound, and exclaimed " How you are hurting me." Tbe Archbishop of Lyons administered extreme unction, and while receiving tbe last rites of the Church, Carnot murmured twice " I am dying." Then he said, '• I am very glad my friends are here," and so expired.

Santo had lived in France six months, but only arrived in Lyons yesterday. He has given no explanation yet of his motive. His age is only 22. The mob nearly lynched him before the police could get :Jhim away.

Upon the news reaching tbe theatre women shrieked and fainted, the men howled for vengeance and death to the assassin and rushed madly into the streets. All illuminations were instantly quenched. The news was not generally known for Borne time in Paris, where Madame Carnot and family were. The fury of the people of Lyons is terrible.

LONDON, June 25. English newspapers deplore tbe President's death.- They appear to believe it was an act of revenge for the went execution of anarchists. There is general mourning throughout Franco at the President's death. Madame Carnot, with two sons, arrived in Lyons, where enormous crowds assembled, and extended a sympathetic greeting. Madame remained in the death chamber for some time. The body was clad in eyening dress with the Grand Cordon of the Legion of Honor on the breast. It will probably lie in State in Pans. The mob wrecked the Italian cafe from which the assassin emerged. The Queen, Prince of Wales, and , the English Government wired messages of condolence to Madame Carnot and the European sovereigns have conveyed their sympathy. The Emperor of Germany personally wiTed to Madame Carnot.

The Italian Embassy is guarded. It is reported that Scotland Yard, London, warned the French police a fortnight ago of an anarchist plot agamst deceased.

Tbe new President will be elected at Versailles on Wednesday.

1 MELBOURNE, June 26. The Premier has cabled to Madame Carnot a message of condolence.
