At the election for the vacant Beat for Pontefract in tbe House of Commons, Mr Missery, Home Rule candidate, defeated Mr Lees, Conservative, by 32 votes. [At last eleotion the Conservative majority was 40. J

Sir S. Samuel and Sir C. Tupper had an interview with Lord Ripon respecting the granting of a subvention to Huddart Parker's steamers as cruisers, and also for postal services. Lord Ripon gave a favorable ear to the representations, and promised to arrange for an interview between the Agents-General and Earl Spencer, head of tbe Admiralty.

Competition has improved at tbe wool sales, and prices have a firmer tendency.

The American correspondent of the Daily News says the action of the Indian Council has caused a great sensation in tbe United States. Extreme 6ilver advocates admit it will be impossible to continue the present policy of monthly purchase of silver. Business is paralysed ; nevertheless, the President is averse to Congress meeting before September.

SYDNEY, June 29.

It is reported from the islands that a Queensland labor vessel has been seized by recruits at Malayta, the crew massacred, and the vessel burned. No confirmation, however, has yet been veeeived.

Medical evidence shows tho man alleged to have been kicked to death by larrikins died of fracture of the spine. Tho body bears no traces of kicking, though two witnesses swear to it.

ADELAIDE, Jane 28.

The Premier has announoed the policy of the Government. They would abandon the tariff increase proposed by the late Government, and substitute an extra halfpenny to the land tax, with exemption up to £5000. It was intended to impose an additional 20 per cent tax on absentee land, and increase the income tax by 6d, with one ahilling on all incomes above £1000. The Government would introduce electoral reform, and they approved of elective Ministries; graduated reduction of from 5 to 10 per cent in the civil service salaries, including ministers and members of parliament. The Government would eDdeavor to nationalise tbe savings bank, and issue State notes later on.
