POLITICAL NEWS.

(from our special.) WELLINGTON, June 24. Owing to the unworkableness of the present Shop and Shop Assistants Act it is proposed to replace it this session by a Shop Hours Bill. In this measure, instead of allowing the local body to fix the day on which shops in any given district shall close tbe Minister has appointed Saturday for the compulsory half-holiday ; but in any case where that may cause undue inconvenience it will be possible to choose another day. The exception in favor of chemists, hairdressers, and tobacconists is to be removed. The Municipal Corporations Bill, whioh tbe Premier is to introdnoe, is not a consolidating measure, but includes many of the amendments recommended by the Municipal Conference. j The outcome of the libel aotion at Napier absorbs ail attention in the lobbies, and the prevailing opinion is that Mr Cadman will be asked to be relieved from Ministerial cares, and that bis colleagues will be bound to accept bis resignation. The Payment of Members Bill which Mr Ward ia to introduce merely provides for an amendment o! the existing Act by entitling members to draw their monthly honorarium from date of election and not from the time they are sworn in. Messrs Harkness and Wright again act si Opposition whips. The Government do not intend to renew the marriage license to Worthington, of Temple of Truth lame.
