THE EXHIBITION.

• The attendance at the Exhibition daring yesterday afternoon was fair. In the evening, despite the wretched weather, there was a large number present, and the business done was very satisfactory. •• Mrs Jarley'a Waxworks " attracted a large number, being ran as a side-show. The scenes had to be repeated three times, and were on eaoh ocoasion well patronised. The waxworks were most effective, and showed that much trouble bad been gone to by the promoters, Mrs J. Scott and Mrs MacFarland, assisted by Mr Nirnmo Scott. The other shows did well. The gipsy encampment was in charge of Mrs Nolan, who told the fortunes of a large number, some of the predictions being calculated to terrify the most stout- hearted. The other gipaie in the camp were Misses Tait and Sowerby, who were also well-versed in the fortnne-telling art. The crocodile and other curiosities lent by Mr Stevenson, of Manaia, attracted much attention, and a shooting-gallery, in charge of Mr Eraser, was kept going. The refreshment room did a fairly good trade, and the ladies in charge were kept busy. At the fancy goods stall good business was done. The Hawera Band enlivened the proceedings with several selections, played excellently. At the instance of Mr Brunette, Mrs King has agreed to show school children the working of the spinning wheel now on view at the exhibition. It will be shown to- morrow afternoon. At the R.M. Court on Friday a case was called on in which the plaintiff, a settler at Otakebo, had travelled 15 miles to appear, but the defendant was absent, the summons not having been served. The R.M. demanded the reason, and was informed that owing to the nrgency of police duties, there had been no time to serve the summons. Mr Oaplen, who appeared for plaintiff:, eaid that the way in which the bailiff work was carried out was really scandalous. The police, be admitted, wero not to blame, as their police duties occupied so much of their time tha i they were absolutely unable to give proper attention to the bailiff work. Mr Kettle said he had already made representation to the Justice Department on the matter ; and he would again bring it under attention. He quite agreed that there ought to be a bailiff. was an especially bard case.
