Tbe junior match on Saturday between Hawera and Taiporohenui was worth seeing, for some good play was shown. The Maoris astonished not a few by their fine tackling, and one or two of them played a meritorious game. Their good humor, too, was most noticeable, and there was no wrangling. On tbe Hawera side, N. A'Court played a very nice same, taking the ball well and running ip'endidly. He had, however, a certain atuonnt of luck in his " pots.'" Blytb played a good game, as also did H. Babbage. In tbe forwards, Baker and Trott were conspicuous, all the others playing up well. The local men should renders good acoount of themselves this season. One of tbe " Moonlighters " writes in reference to tbe match in which the Hawera schoolboys defeated them by 46 points to nil : — •• Only fonr of our team rolled up, and we had to play with eleven two-year-olds who never saw a ball before." The cup match between the Stars and Clifton is described as a splendid exposition of tbe game of football, and one of tbe most exciting matches played in New Plymouth for years. W. Bayly (Clifton) was first to score off -a mark obtained by Jonas. Shortly afterwards Ryan (Stars) obtained a try, which was not enhanced. This was the state of the game at half time. The second spell was very severe, both teams playing brilliantly. One of the Stars kicked bard over tbe line, and s free race ended in Clifton foroing. Only ten minutes now remained, and the Stars made a final effort, wbioh ended in Thomson scoring, but no goal resulted. The eoores were now equal. The pay was kept in Clifton's quarters, who were compelled to force. However, they worked the ball out into tbe field again, bat the blacks responded gamely, and by diut of hard work carried the oval back. Tbe Clifton full-back, in attempting to stop tbe rush, let the bali paBB, and L. Allen, following it up, touched it down amidst the deafening cheers of tbe onlookers. Tbo kick *as an awkward one, and remained unconverted. Mr A. Matbe3on (formerly of Hawera) acted as referee. There will be a practice on the local ground to-morrow afternoon, at 2.30. I hope to see a good muster. Tbe following Hawera junior team has been selected to play the Normanby juniors at Normanby on Saturday next : — T. Coffey, Blvth, A'Court, Hobbs, Winks, Keith, M. Coffey, Hobson, Dwyar, Smjtb, Trott, Clarson, Baker, Young, Shepard. Emergencies— forward, Robertson ; back, Whiting. The team leaves Hawera at 1 p.m. sharp. The Eltham tffttn did not pat in an appearance at Patea on Saturday, nor did* they acquaint Patea of their intention to forfeit. The following players will represent Patea in the cup match against Hawera next Saturday, at Patea : — Full baok — Kitßon ; three-quarters— Hamilton, Kells, and Jollie ; halves—Beamish, Burke, and Powdrell ; forwards— Ball, Dnigan, East. bury, Gower, C. and O. Hawken, D. Malone, and Pearce. Emergencies — A. Gower and D. Sergeant* The senior match at Wanganui on Saturday between Kaierau and "Castlecliff was an extraordinarily tame affair, it being nothing more than a good passing practice for tbo maroons. Only one spell was played, tbe Kaieraus scoring 30 points during it. The blacks bad quite enough in the first spell, and would not play the second. Kaierau then played all comers, and won by five points to four. Tbe London correspondent of tbe Australasian writes under date April 7 :— The Rugby Football Union have decided that in future a " try " shall count three points At the Alhambra Theatre (says tbe Sydney Bulletin) they have struck something quite novel, iv a troups of Siamese footballers. The Siam " followers " and " half baoks " disdain tbe use of tbe toe in their version of Melbourne's " national game." They kick off with their heads, catch the ball with the chin, and generally treat the " bounding leather " in a manner surprising to our native barraokers. They neither assault the nmpire nor darken the air with horrible language, as far as one can understand. Ail ttia same, the ebow is cleverly oontested, and both sides seem to win. A Curietchnrch player put up a record in a recent match, when he kicked five goals, three ot which were from tries obtained by himself, while one was a drop from the field. In all he scored 22 points.
