CORRESPONDENCE.
ENGAGEMENT AT OTATJTO.
To the Editor of the Star.
Sib, — As an old member of tbe colonial forces present at Pipiriki daring tbe Maori attack on that post in '65, and as one of tbe East Coast Expeditionary Force operating at Opotiki and Hawke's Bay, I can endorse all that Mr. E. 0. Meredith has stated. Coffey and Hughes belonged to the Taranaki military settlers, as I did, and could not bave been with General Chnte in his attack on Otanto. Oar force landed at Patea in '68 and came up this coast, camping near tbe site of (he present Hawera, wbioh was then & fern flat. In '68 I was lieutenant of tbe Wairoa (now Wayerley) Bifle Volunteers on active service nnder Colonel MoDonnell and Colonel Wbitmore, and do not remember seeing either of those gentlemen (Coffey or Hughes], though I was stationed with a detaohment of my company at Patea (not tbe present town, which was then a flax swamp, bnt on tbe sand hills near tbe beads) for some time, with the main body of the force guarding Tauroa and his tribe, whom we had taken prisoners. Afterwards Col. Whitmore took command, bringing several companies of tbe Armed Constabulary (one of theße was commanded by Captain, now Colonel, Eoberts). What men were in these Ido not know, as they were only with as Wairoas in tbe Okotnku affair (where Major Hnnter and several others were killed) and left a day or so after. I was not present at Whitmore's attack on Otauto, and oannot say who was there.-* J. W. Kenah.
