In connection with the fire which destroyed Messrs. Sidey and Lookie's premieee at Napier on Monday evening, the Hawke'e Bay Herald gives a striking example of a fireman's pluck:--" Pre« eently a ory was raised 'There's dynamite in the place, , and a sudden and noticeable wave of motion affected the immense crowd of spectators as the ominous words were beard. This was followed by & little stampede. While it was in progress another shout was heard, 'There's no dynamite there at all, but there's enough powder to blow up the whole block. , Mr J. W. Smith, of the fire police, seeing Mr T. Sidney standiD? near, got the key of tbe shop from him. Opening the door, Mr Smith went down on his hands and knees, and a handkerchief over his month, orawled into the euffooating emoke to get out tbe powder. Mr Wiebart, an employee of tbe firm of Sidey and Lockie, followed. Mr Smith brought back to the front portion of tbe premises several paoketa of powder, and Mr Wiehart aleo got out a keg. Willing hands in the streets soon removed tbese dangerous packages to where they would not be exposed to heat, and tbe firemen «nd others engaged about the building worked with greater freedom of mind.
