NEW BUILDINGS.

Building is still progressing steadily in Hawera. There is no rush, but all around may be observed signs of steady progress ; in taot this has been the case for the past two or three years. Most of the buildings recently erected are of a substantial kind. But more are wanted : the supply is not equal to the demand, for every day persons are house-hunting, and it is a known fact that in the past and even at the present time families are living in lodging houses through being unable to obtain private houses of a suitable kind. Rents have risen slightly, or on an average at least two or three shillings in the pound. We have no desire nor object in unnecessarily oraoking up the subject, but gather these faots from reliable sources and personal observation. Steady work in the building line is, no doubt, one of the best signs of a town's progress. "ft-Dr. Riohardß has just had oompleted a very commodious and handsome residence on bis property in Princes-street. The building contains seven roomß. The drawing room, ornamented with a handsome bow window, is nicely finished, and measures 16 x 12. At the rear of this is a large, well lighted dining room, 18 x 12. Through the centre of the building, from front to back, is a roomy ball, a bath room, being enclosed at the extreme end. On the other side of the hall are three bedrooms ; and a kitchen is provided. Altogether the building is of cabital design, and the workmanship first class. Meeßre. Smart and Hood were the oontraotors, from plans prepared by the same firm. >COn oneol tbeseotions recently sold in Union -street there has been erected a snug dentist's Burgery t| to the order of Mr. A. G. Atkinson, whose, old - premises were quite inadequate and unsuitable tor his growing business. The . new building contains four rooms. One dt the front is the waiting-room, commodious and furnished 'up to date. At the rear of this is the room, the soene of qperation, where all who pass through, it is hoped, will suffer grief and pain no more. Opposite to this is the workroom, where the paradoxes — the true -false friends — are made or repaired. Mr. Brodriok was the designer of the building, and a more con* venient construction for the purpose could hardly be imagined. The whole affair is very convenient and substantial. Mr, O. F. Baker was the contractor. The section is enclosed with a strong close-boarded fence. The premises may be said to be rather out ot the way at present ; bat no doubt a short time will see tbis portion of the town.tbiokly populated. >y. A little further along the same contractor has just finished a four-roomed cottage as a residence for Mr. Patterson, one of our popular guardians of the peace. Good work seems to have been put into the building, which is certainly of a desirable class. *<Mr. Jenkins' new furniture shop, in High-street, is now oocupied by the owner, who will shortly have a stock of useful lines. The building is 35ft. in depth, 18ft. wide, with 12ft. Bin. Btud.and was erected by Mr. G. Syme, jun. The proprietor's good work is doubtless already sufficiently known to ensure him a steady and satisfactory return for his outlay.

Out of a comparatively insignifioant cottage has sprung a very nice dwelling. Mr. Mendelson has assisted to improve bis quarter of the town by enlarging bis residence in Prinoes-street.
