WELLINGTON, January 11, Mr. John Dmmmond has been appointed Inspector of Stook for the Hawke's Bay district.
"WELLINGTON, Jannary 12. Major Gaßcoigne, Besident Magistrate at Chatham, reports that several icebergs were off tbe islands on October 29, and some were stranded among tbe rooks. One was 500 feet high ; another nearly half a mile long remained in sight a few days and then broke up. A strong southerly breeze was blowing. He could not ascertain whether bergs were ever s?en at the Chathams before : tbe oldest natives did not know what tbey were.
INVEROARGILL, January 12.
Annie Byrnes, a single woman, jumped from the jetty with her infant last evening. She clung to a pile, and was rescued, but tbe child was drowned. She had been driakiog, and was in the asylum for lunacy for some time.
