Ministerial Crisis in New South Wales.
(PEE PBBSS ASSOCIATION.)
SYDNEY, October 16.
On tbe motion for the third reading of the Coal Mines Bill, wbicb legalises eight hours as tbe limit of labor, Mr. McMillan, formerly Treasurer in tbe present Ministry, moved its reoommittal, oppoing tbe legalisation of the eight hours system for one clbQ3 of community and not for another. Sir Henry Farkes disclaimed responsibility for the insertion of the clause, which the Minister of Mines bad assented to while he was absent from the House through illness. He opposed fixing the hours of labor. Legislation on tbe sub* ject was not wanted, as the working man was sufficiently pawerfal to make good bis will in the matter without the aid of Parliament. He would retire from office rather than assent to the olause. Mr. Barton moved tbe adjournment of the debate. The Premier asserted that if the motion were not carried tbe Government would not proceed with the bill. They would not submit to a refusal to adjourn. Eventually tbe adjournment was negatived by 49 to 41. Sir H. Parkea said that, in view of his previous statement* he had no M alternative but to ask the House to (| adjourn, which was carried amidst considerable excitement.
The Premier has gone on a tour of the South Island.
