Freight on Butter and Railway Charges.

Mr. Olson, of the Junction Boad, while passing through Wellington, interviewed the Hon. Mr. Mitchelson, as well as Mr. Maxwell and Mr. Hannay, of the Bailway Department.and pointed out the advantage the Taranaki settlers would derive from a night train running just previous to the departure of a direct steamer for London, so that consignments could be forwarded without any fear of the butter being deteriorated through it being allowed to remain for days in the bud on the wharf before being shipped. The Minister of Public Works and the railway officials told Mr. Olson that they would do all they could in the matter ; in the mean time they wished for additional information as to the probable quantity of butter likely to be sent by the special train. This Mr. Olson said he would undertake to supply. He also asked the railway authorities to reduce the freight on butter, and Mr. Maxwell said he would see what could be done in tbe matter. There was another thing Mr Olson interested himself about. It appears that the farmers who ship their butter Home have to pay the freight in this colony instead of getting it made a charge when it reaches London, and paid there when it had been realised. He interviewed three of the agents in Wellington, and pointed out to them the hardship it was on the farmer, whilst it could make no difference to the shipping companies whether the freight was paid at this end or the other. The agents said they would write Home, and see if Mr. Olson's suggestion, could be earned out, and would cotnmuuicate with him on receiving a reply. — Taranaki Herald.
