PARLIAMENT.

(PEE UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

HOUSE OF BEPEESENTATIVES.

Friday, June 8. DEBATE ON THE TARIFF.

Mr. Duncan resumed tbe debate on the Cußtomß Duties Bill. It was the duty of a Treasurer to extract as little as possible from the pockets of people, but the present proposals would affect many thousands of persons, especially in country districts. They meant lOp.c. advance all round. Tbe tea duty put country members iv a most unpleasant position, as, if thdy voted against it, tbey would have to answer to their constituents for voting in a direction which might mean the abolition of local subsidies. Mining interests were affected just as much as country settlers. He claimed to be a free-trader, and, as bucu, contended the Treasurer Bbould have no more money than was absolutely necessary ; but this tariff would give a great deal more than was requisite. It really would drain the whole country for the benefit of the four large towns. Mr. Jones denied that the country districts would be injuriously affected. They, above all others, were exceptionally well treated.

Mr. Jackson was utterly opposed to tbe taxation for purely protective purposes, but he recognised the need for extra revenue. The reduction of nearly a quarter of a million in the public services showed tbe Government were earnest in their intentions of retrenchment, and they had undoubtedly taken steps to put our finances on a sound footing. Their programme, in his opinion, was a good one, and he should help them to carry it out. Mr. Kerr said there was no doubt the money mast be bad, and if it was not got from tbe Customs it must be got from land,- and that would hurt the agricultural-ists-irior 8 than tbe tariff. There were many things in the list not touched which he Would like to see taxed. For his own part; he was satisfied the farmers could carry on things as tbey were, but if the land bad to be taxed they would be ruined.
