Major-General Whitmore, in the Legislative Council, gave notice to move tomorrow, That, considering the unsettled state of affairs at Home, the militia be enrolled, and that part of the first-class be called out for training.

A female inmate of the lunatic asylum Mrs. Green, in a sworn statement made very serious charges against the management and officials of the asylum. The substance of her statement is that she has been illtreated by some of the female attendants, that they dressed themselves up as ghosts to frighten here, and locked her up in a padded room telling her that they were going to the undertaker to order her coffin. Subsequently one of tho attendants came to her as a sister of mercy asking her to make a confession before the coffin came. She also complains that she was dragged by the hair to the bath room and when 6he refused to go they slapped her in the face. The complaints have been forwarded to the Government.

PALMERSTON N., May 29.

At a public meeting held last night, it was resolved not to sell the town hall site to liquidate the overdraft. It turns out that the overdraft is within the legal limit, and can be easily liquidated shortly. It is also probable that a halfpenny general rate only will be required for this year, and that even a farthing rate may suffice.

Tho elections for the new council are being held to-day, the three seats in each ward being well contested.
