Intelligence has been received through deserters from Stanley's expedition that all were well at the end of October, and that the party was plentifully supplied with provisions.
Major-General Charles Henry Owen, R.A., has been appointed to command the defences of Portsmouth and director of the School of Gunnery on the Isle of Wight.
Two cargoes of Australian wheat sold at 34s 3d.
