There was a large attendance at Messrs. Nolan, Tonks, and Co.'s stock sale to-day. Tbe cattle sold fetched a little more than prices ruling a few weeks ago. There was a large entry of sheep, which fetched high prices.

The Hon. Mr. Hart presented a petition to the* Legislative Council on Friday from tbe General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, calling attention to tbe increase of juvenile gambling, and also to the loose condition of the licensing laws, and requesting the Legislature to consider tbe subject.

The New York Lira issues a greater variety of Policies, and has secured better resultß to its members, than any other sompany. It also has paid the largest Tontine Dividends.

While doing this it offers its memlerA.beolute Security, and backs up it* promises (winch have ne%'er been bioken) with an asset fund of Sixteen Millions Sterling. Its actual results on mature 1 policies have in every instance exceeded the estimates.

We remind our readers of the meetings to be held at the Eltham Boad on Thursday and at Ngaire on Friday evening to consider the question of merging tbe Boad Boards in the County Council. The meetings have been called by the oouncil »t the instance of a number of ratepayers on the Plains. The councillors are determined to move in the matter, because tbey are satisfied that with only one road controlling body the expenses of management and of working could be greatly reduced.

The result of tbe local option poll in Hawera shows that tbe question of increasing the number of licensed houses is far from aburamg. The unique fact that at Hawera only one man voted reminds one of Milton's Paradise Lost, when Abdiel alone was " faithful fonnd among tbe faithless, faithful only be." Upon this occasion the individual concerned announced bis intention of voting, and forthwith did so ; oonsegueptly tbe secresy ef the ballot was Suite ' destroyed. In the outside places lie polling • was quite insignificant in numbers, and curiously enough throughout the diatriofi m three eases tbe poll was decided by one vote only.

A meeting of the committee appointed to report on the best site for holding intnre A. and P. shows was beld on Tuesday. ■ The committee were agreed that practically their choice was confined to tbe present site and the Egmont racecourse, although a ten acre paddock near the railway station would have been suitable if available. After discussion it was agreed to recommend the holding of the show on the Egmont racecourse in future, as it was held to be more convenient for visitors and exhibitors of stock, and to offer better accommodation for ladies and children. The cost of removal of yards, Ac, it was proposed to meet by collecting as many fees for life membership of the society as possible, £5 being the life membership fee. A report was drafted, and steps were taken to obtain offers from tbe racing club and from Mr. Fjntham favorable to tbe change proposed.

A Melbourne correspondent writes : — Tbe way things have gone ahead here in regard to mining matters is simply marvellous. Eighteen months to two years ago, before all this great silver rush took place, there was only one Exchange, and not a very grand one at that. The entrance fee was £25. Now there are three Exchanges, whilst a fourth was projected, but did not go through. A seat in the Stock Exchange of Melbourne, which, two, years ago was worth only £20, is now worth £1500 and will soon be £2000. The Melbourne Stock Exchange was started eighteen months ago at £5 a member. Tbe fee for entrance iB now £800, and will soon be raised to £500, then there's the Federal just started, which is to be an open Exchange for the public. The News' special correspondent wires that tbe Hon. Mr. Mitchelson, in reply to a deputation re the Main Trunk Bailway, eaid be feared it would be impossible for tbe surveyors' reports to be plaoed before tbe House unless Parliament sat for at least four months, because tbe Government felt that it would be necessary on this occasion to get the detailed surveys, seeing that they had been so sadly deceived in connection with tbe flying survey of the Central route. Tbe report of the flying survey showed that on the Mimi route a good railway gradient of 1 in 50 could be obtained, with only two tunnels of half a mile each, and he thought that on that route a good road could also be obtained. On tbe Stratford route, however there appeared to be no such chance, Mr. Marcbant thought otherwise, but said he was willing to accept tbe opinion of Mr. Skeet, the Taranaki surveyor, who had accompanied the survey party.

The Taranaki Parliamentary correspondent wires:— With regard to the granting of free railway passes to the British football team, Hod. Mr. Mitchelaon admitted the other afternoon that free passes should not have been given them, but excused himself on the ground that he did not know at the time that the trip was a commercial speculation. Had the Government known that earlier, the team would not have got the passes. This is all very well so far as Mr. Mitcheleon was concerned, but tbe Hon. Mr. Stevens presumably knew all about the commercial speculation, and it was he who got the team its exceedingly improper concession. It has transpired that the Otogo Bngby Union strongly protested against the granting of these passes to a team that was, collectively professional, though individually amateurs. Mr. Mitchelson promised that such a thing should never occur again, and it is to be hoped that it will not.

A meeting of creditors in the estate of E. Mpmby was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday, before the Deputy Offioial Assignee. There were present — Metsrs. Bobbins, Adamsoo, Spence, and Ogle. The Assignee said the liabilities, as shown by the debtor's statement, were £00; assets, £46. Of the assets, after an allowance of jEIO for furniture bad been made and tbe security in the hands of the Building Society, bad been realised, tbe assignee thought there would be very little available for the creditors. Under examination the debtor admitted that he had been in constant work as a roadman for the past five years at from Gs 6d to 7s per day. His wages had been spent on necessaries. The creditors did not consider the statement satisfactory, and determined to ask for a poblio examination of tbe debtor. The assetß included £4 odd of wages and a horse and cow, which were ordered to be sold by auotion next day.

Waimate Road Board invites tenders for road works, and notifies that wages for road men during the winter will be 6s per day.

Messrs. Nolan, Tonks and Co. have been instructed by Mr. Mendelssohn, who is leaving the district, to sell by public auction, stock in trade, furniture and effects on Saturday next.

Messrs. Robbins and Fierard announce that they have shifted their Nonnanby branch into the large and commodious premises lately occupied by Mr. England, Pair dealing and small profits will be their motto.
