Freight From New Plymouth.
A business firm in Hokitika writing to the manager of a local dairy factory re freight on dairy produce, says : — In the matter of freight you people that ship from New Plymouth are much handicapped, and must in a great measure retard shipping and trade generally from New Plymouth. We get butter occasionally which is charged 32s 6d per ton freight, and we suppose any shipments you wou'd make would be charged the same. We buy cheese very good in Canterbury at your quotation and only pay 15s freight and from ulmost any port in New Zealand we do not pay more, from Auckland we only pay 15s by direct boat, and when transhipped 20s, and not more than 22s 6d, and why do you people that have produce to ship submit to such a rate of ireigbt ? Your trade may well languish and your Harbor Board will continue to levy rates on rhe settlers for ever, if such an exorbitant rate is still charged by the Union Company, but we presume th 6 Union boats have a monopoly of the New Plymouth trade. We believe those interested have only to make their representations in the proper quarter, to have their freights adjusted to something reasonable, and in accordance with the rate from other ports, otherwise not much will be done with New Plymouth from this part.
