WELLINGTON, April 25. At the Education Board to-day, the following resolution was proposed : — 11 That this board, recognising the difficulties in which school committees are placed in defraying necessary expenses by reason of the reduced capitation, hereby authorise the committees to make a charge of Is per quarter upon all pupils from the Second Class upwards, and 6d per head on all below that class ; such money to be expended by the committees in the purchase of school stationery, etc., and other matters conducive to the comfort and instruction of the children." The chairman ruled that the motion was ultra vires. Opinions were expressed that the board would have to reduce the salaries in order to carry on. WANGANUI, April 26. Ex-Inspector James, on retiring from the police force, was presented to-day with an illuminated address from members of the force stationed in this district. There is some talk of another match between Slavin and Laing. AUCKLAND, April 24. The annual meetings of householders for the election of school committees, &c, were held throughout this district yesterday evening, and were generally well attended. In the city educational district and also at Ponsonby, resolutions were passed recommending the shortening of the terms of school' holidays ; and the householders of the latter district also raggeated that children over 16 years of age be not admitted to the public schools, and that pupils who have attained the sixth standard be not allowed to remain at school. The following resolution was passed at Newmarket : — " That this meeting request the new committee to call the attention of Government to the present pernicious system of electing school com* mittees, whereby each householder can

record his full number of seveu votes to any one candidate." A resolution was adopted in favor of reducing the salaries, rather than the nurnher, as proposed by the Board of Education.
