OTAKEHO.
The report of the committee stated :— " Tour committee commenced with a credit balance of £3 lls lid, and they leave with a credit balance of £4 6s 3d, made up from the usual capitation allowance and from collections, particulars of which are specified in the balance-sheet. Considerable improvements have been effected during the year. On three sides of the school ground, a strip of ground has been fenced off with a substantial wire fence at a cost of £9, and in the enclosed strip 800 pines have been planted. Mr. R. Smith's tender of £6 8s was accepted. Two-thirds of this sum has been paid, leaving a debt of £2 2s Bd. Twelve loads of gravel have been put on the footpaths and other places about the school. Tbe gravel was given by Mr. Milne, and carted by the chairman of the committee free of cost. The chimney, which has hitherto been utterly useless, baa been altered lately, and, so far as we know, we have every reason to believe that it will prove satisfactory. Last May the teacher, Mr. Steuart, sent in his resignation, and tbe application of Mr. Honore was unanimously accepted. During the past year the attendance has steadily increased. There are now 58 names on the roll, and the average attendance last quarter was 43. The annual examination was held last Nov., when 81 per cent, passed of the number presented for examination. At the breaking up of the school, gifts and prizes to the value of i>3 10s were awarded to the children, according to their respective merits, as recorded by the inspector's marks. On the occasion also a lea was given in the schoolroom. The attendance of the children and parents was very satisfactory, and the com mi 1 tec would sincerely tender their thanks for the hearty and kindl}' services given by the ladies. — (Sd.) R. Dingle, Chairman of Committee."
