LONDON, February 17. The wheat afloat for the United Kingdom amounts to 1,664,000 quarters.

At tho wool sales to-day. 12,000 bales were offered. Two thousand bales were withdrawn.

LONDON, February 18.

Moro spirit was manifested at the wool sales to-day, and merinos and combing wools maintained the opening prices ; medium and inferior scoured and greasy are barely equal to the best December rates. Three-fifths of the quantity offered were purchased by foreign buyers. American buyers purchased 3000 bales.

The debate on Mr. Paroell's amendment to the Address-in-Reply has not revealed any now aspects of the Irish question. Mr. Gladstone, in supporting O'Brien, emphasised his sj'mpathy with the plan of campaign and the tactics of the Land League, and declared that Messrs. Parnell and O'Brien were representatives of a nation in which the Government were only a part}'. Mr. Balfour, in his speech, answered the statements of Mr. O'Brien respecting the btate of Ireland, and cited facts to show the improvement that had taken place in Ireland. Mr. Goschen charged Mr. Gladstone and the Parnellites with making a direct endeavor to thwart the operations of the law. A division was taken ou Mr. ParneU's amendment, resulting in its rejection Ly 317 votes to 229.

Tho election for the Southwark seat rendered vacant by the resignation of A. Cohen, resulted in the return of Causton, a Home Rule supporter, who polled 3480 votes as against 2440 votes received by Beddall, Conservative.

Earl Dufferin will succeed Right Hon. Sir John Savill Lumby, G.C.8., as British Ambassador at Rome, in August.

Replies received by Lord Sandhurst from Colonial Ministers, as to enquiries madeby him with reference to colonization, are chiefly of an unfavorable nature.

It is officially announced that the Russian Government have re-opened the Bulgarian question, and have commenced fresh negotiations for the settlement of the difficulty.

SYDNEY, February 21.

New South Wales won the Centennial Rifle Match, the prizes for which are a five hundred pounds cup and cash prizes of one hundred pounds. South Australia was second, thirty-six points behind.

A woman and child were burned to death in a tent near Parrarnatta. The fire was caused through a candle setting light to the tent. Three children escaped.

BRISBANE, February 21.

A great hurricane has been experienced, with heavy rainfall, on the northern coast. The steamer You Yangs arrived at Townsville with her foremast carried away and her anchor and cables 'gone. The captain reports having encountered a hurricane ; also, that the steamer Geelong has been wrecked on the boulder beach, Long Island, and the crew drowned. There is a possibility of the steamer being floated. A number of other vessels are overdue, aud anxiety is felt for their safety.

Sir George Otto Trevelyan, speaking at Edinburgh, stated that the introduction into Parliament of a measure dealing with Home Rule might be expected this session, aud would contain some of the intentions of the Bill introduced by Mr. Gladstone on April 8, 1886.
