At a meeting of the Waitaki County Council, it was stated that tho Californian thistle had been growing at llakanui for the last sixteen years, there being about ten acres on Teschmaker's quite solid ; also an island in the Kakanui covered with it. When sinking a well the roots were found to a depth of ten feet.

It is carious (says the Echo) to note how new words spring into natural existence and recognition from time to time, alter tho manner oi " boycotting," which rose from tho name ot a man who was shuunnl by his neighbours. Tho latest example is given by the French, who, noticing that M. Sadi Carnot dropped the nutnn " Sadi ;" when he rose to thediguity of the Presidency, now applies the word " sadisine " to every case where a man who rises desires to " cut " his old acquaintances. Forgetfulness of friends will in future be " sadisine."

It is a very bad habit (saj-s a Homo paper) to. eat orange peel. Nor is the juvenile habit of eating apples with the peel on to bo recommended either. Parents who do not care as yet to check these evil prosperities will perhaps be more inclined to do co when they hear that the little black specks which may be found on the skins of oranges and apples that have been kept for some time are clusters of fuugi, precisely similar to those to which whooping cough is attributed. Dr. Tschamer, of Graz, who has made the discovery, scraped some of these black specks off an orange, and introduced them into his lungs by a strong inspiration. Next day he was troubled with violent tickling in the throat, which by the end of the week had developed into an acute attack of whooping cough.

" Puff," in the Press, writes :—": — " Mrs. Fawcett Story's teaching the sweet girl graduntes how to cook ! She says a good dinner will keep a man at home better than the finest sonata of Beethoven ! Rather ! Blow the music, says I, when I come home with a healthy pecker on me 1 Give me grub, and lots of it, and soon! Well, I don't care about having such a lot of it! Little and good's the idea! I ain't fond of having a civil war going on in my inside for a couple of hours after dinner ! It's wonderful what a saving even a slight knowledge of the art of cookery makes in the wear and tear on the coats of the stumjack ! Mrs. Fawcett Story isn't satisfied with tho attendance at her lectures ! Bless you, uo 1 The girls all think they know how to cook, or else they turn up their nose, " tip-tilted like the petals of a rose," and say they're not going to do the slavey business ! They're going to get married and do the grand ! Are they, that's all! Well, they'll got sold if they don't look out ! An educated woman who can run a house properly is a thing of beauty and a joy for ever! Any cook who isn't acquainted with the gridiron in this world, certainly will be in the next !"

The Waimate Road Board meets on Wednesday, the 29th mat., at 1.30 pjn.

There has been a good deal of speculation duriug the last day or two as to the following rule of racing :—": — " Two-year-old horses shall not be allowed to start in anj' race over a distance exceeding six furlongs, nor shall any two-3'ear-ohl be allowed to run in any handicap in which horses of other ages are engaged prior to the Ist February." Does this mean, in the first place, two-year-olds may not run in auy race exceeding three-quirters of a mile iv distance? Does it meau, in the second place, that two-year-old horses may not run in any handicap, even though the distance be three-quarters of a mile, before the Ist February ? Or does it mean that two-year-olds may run in any race or handicap whatever may be the distance, provided the race takes place after Ist February.
